About Us

The Lawrence Youth Symphony (LYS) was founded in 1967 as an extension to the instrumental music classrooms of the Lawrence Public Schools.. This program is open to all instrumental music students in grades 7 through 12 interested in a fun, yet challenging orchestral experience. Students will have the opportunity to grow as musicians through the repertoire of a true Symphonic Orchestra.

Students seeking to participate in LYS must be active members of his/her school band or string orchestra program. String musicians must have at least one full year of experience on their instrument. Winds, brass, and percussion must have at least two full years of experience on their instrument.

The group is sponsored by the Lawrence Public School District.
